JOB CONTEXT

The National Gallery Scientific Department is a world leader in the technical study and care of old master pictures. Particular areas of expertise include: the analysis and study of the materials of paintings, the development of analytical techniques used for Heritage Science research, conservation documentation and the organisation, storage and presentation of Heritage Science data. The role is intended to carry out work to minimise the impact of the National Galley’s Digital Dossier Programme (DDP) on the rest of the Scientific team, who already face multiple demands on their time from day-to-day business and the Gallery’s ambitious bicentenary plans.

The role is flexible, blending both in-house and remote working as appropriate, and can be structured as either full or part-time.

JOB PURPOSE

The post holder will join the Scientific Department as part of a team undertaking innovative research to improve how the growing wealth of historic, conservation and analytical data and images produced and held by the National Gallery Scientific Department can be organised, stored, presented and re-used as FAIR data. They will also consider how the results of new work and research can be automatically added to the digital dossiers into the future.

The post holder will bring the digital and informatics knowledge and experience required to ensure the organisation, formatting and accessibility of the Scientific Department digital resources, as required by the ongoing NG Digital Dossier Programme. In collaboration with a new DDP Heritage Science Documentation Specialist role, they will act as the Scientific Department’s primary connection to the wider DDP, taking decisions related to their own specialisms and providing content and other material, and quality assurance, as required. They will have sufficient delegated authority to ensure that the DDP does not need to always call on existing staff for programme activities.

The role therefore is key to the successful delivery of the DDP; managing Scientific department expectations as DDP stakeholders; and ensuring that colleagues – within the Scientific department – can deliver their other commitments for the DDP, bicentenary, other projects, and day-to-day activities.

As well as being a member of the Scientific department, the role will work closely with other DDP embedded roles in Scientific, Conservation and Curatorial, ensuring consistency and coherence across departments.
