The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of Western European paintings in the world, with over 2,000 works dating from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. In addition to the permanent displays, the Gallery stages an ambitious programme of world class temporary exhibitions across three different spaces. Featuring loans from international public and private collections, the exhibition programme aims to explore and enhance the permanent collection, to inspire our visitors and offer them new ways of engaging with paintings.

The Exhibitions department is responsible for the management and delivery of the temporary exhibition programme including any onward tours and now seeks an Exhibitions Registrar to work on specific projects within our programme.

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Negotiation of conditions of loan with public and private lenders, including transport, insurance, valuations, and display requirements.
  • Preparation and management of budgets for transport and casing, courier arrangements, insurance, loan preparation and external conservators
  • Procurement and appointment of transport agents in accordance with the Gallery’s framework Agreement; management of indemnity and insurance coverage
  • Scheduling, supervising and management of the installation of specific exhibitions within the programme

You will have a degree, or equivalent, in an arts related subject and will be experienced in organising exhibitions in a museum or gallery environment, with responsibility for all registrarial elements of projects.

Highly organised and with excellent attention to detail, you will also be able to demonstrate your ability to plan effectively and ensure delivery of projects on time, within budget and to the highest standards.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work collaboratively with a range of internal and external colleagues, remaining calm under pressure and ensuring effective communication and decision making at all times.
