Development Officer, Trusts and Major Gifts

The Development Officer, Trusts and Major Gifts will support the Trusts & Individuals team in reaching the team’s ambitious fundraising targets, working with the team’s Development Managers. The Development Officer will play an active role, through the writing of funding reports and proposals for both individual and trust / foundation donors and prospects, and through directly seeking funding from a small portfolio of Trust and Foundations.


This role will provide day to day support to the Development Managers and Head of Philanthropy for both Trust and Major Gifts fundraising. Their key task will be to prepare reports and case for support documents, including proposals for exhibitions and other projects, to be used to request funding and secure renewals of support from donors and prospects. They will also have responsibility for fundraising from their own portfolio of smaller Trusts and Foundations.


  • Provide day-to-day support for the Development Managers, Major Gifts, and the Senior Development Manager, Trusts and Foundations across their whole portfolio of tasks and activities relating to Trust fundraising and work with Major Donors
  • Source information (including budgets), and draft, format and design reports and proposals for Trust and Foundation and Major Donor supporters
  • Build case for support documents, including exhibition proposals and reports
  • Draft and prepare correspondence for donors and prospects, and briefing notes for events and meetings, liaising with staff across the Gallery at all levels, as well as senior volunteers
  • Build own portfolio of smaller Trusts and Foundations, with asks of £5 – 20k, in support of the National Gallery Maintain an effective filing and retrieval system both electronically and hard copy. Record and update information on Tessitura, in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 2018, and ensure that all data relating to donors and prospects is accurate and up to date
  • Assist at team cultivation and stewardship events
  • Undertake other administrative tasks as requested, to assist in meeting the objectives of the Trusts and Individual Giving team
