The National Gallery is looking for a part-time Archive Assistant to support the operations of the Research Centre in managing the Gallery’s archive collections. The archive includes the institutional records of the National Gallery dating from 1824 as well as collected archives relating to private individuals and businesses associated with the Gallery. This role will carry out a range of tasks with a focus on reader services and enquiry work.
The role contributes to the effective functioning of the Research Centre in preserving a record of the Gallery’s history and activities. It ensures that the Gallery can maintain and develop its role as a leading centre for the study of painting in the Western European tradition by effectively manages its records.
The role sits in the Research Centre with a particular focus on the archive collection and records management. The position assists the Archivist in invigilating external visitors and responding to enquiries. In addition the post-holder will be called upon to provide administrative support to the Archivist.
SCOPE OF JOB
The jobholder will invigilate external visitors to the Research Centre and answer internal/external enquiries about the archive and the art historical dossiers. This will involve the retrieval of items from the archive store. The jobholder will assist the Archivist in the review of records for destruction and assist Gallery departments to prepare their records either through transfer, destruction or digitisation. There will be some general administrative duties, including maintaining facilities.
