SPILL Festival

Archived: Executive Director

SPILL is seeking to recruit a new Executive Director to join new Artistic Director Robin Deacon and the SPILL team on the creation and development of SPILL’s world-renowned festival of performance and year-round Think Tank programme. You will be part of a small, friendly team working with innovative artists from around the globe, commissioning and producing bold, ambitious and groundbreaking work for Ipswich and further afield. You will join us on this journey at an exciting moment of transition and reconfiguration for SPILL as the new leadership aims to take this festival – with its powerful legacy and reputation – in new and unexpected directions.

ABOUT SPILL

In 2020, SPILL made the announcement that its creator, Robert Pacitti would be stepping aside from his role as Artistic Director. Robert founded SPILL in 2007, giving the festival and organisation his bold vision and leadership for fifteen years. Following an extensive international recruitment process, SPILL announced Robin Deacon as new Artistic Director and CEO. After a decade as a Professor of Performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the world’s leading multi-disciplinary art colleges, Robin relocated to Ipswich, Suffolk to take up the Artistic Director role at SPILL. An established artist, writer and educator, Robin is now leading preparations for SPILL 2021, a festival postponed from 2020, and curated by Robert Pacitti. Robin is now also leading the curation of a year-round programme of events, courses and classes in SPILL’s beautiful Think Tank building, attached to Ipswich Museum.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking a motivated and open-minded individual to work closely with the Artistic Director in the creation and implementation of a new 5-year strategy and business plan for SPILL Festival and the Think Tank. You will be a forward-thinking planner and collaborator with the proven ability to turn vision into reality. You will have a passion for both experimental and accessible approaches to art making, and a desire to support and advocate for practices which push the boundaries. Eloquent and empathetic – with strong financial acumen – you will hold key relationships with funders, partners and the Board. A track record in successful fundraising and development activities will be essential for this role. You will also be somebody who is able to contribute to a radical reimagining of the festival format, from its technologies to its economic model – this is with the longer-term intention of positioning SPILL at the cutting edge of new, ingenious ways of enabling audience spectatorship and participation that are resilient to future challenges and uncertainties.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

With the Artistic Director focusing on all creative aspects of SPILL, the Executive Director oversees delivery of all aspects of the Business Plan that support and contribute to that artistic vision. The Executive Director has primary responsibility for all other aspects of the Company including finance, fundraising, development, legal, management, HR and governance matters. An interface between the artistic and the organisational aspects of the company, the Executive Director role is designed to provide oversight and facilitation to realise and implement SPILL’s mission.
