Salary: £43,500 – £53,000 per annum plus benefits

The Natural History Museum is one of the world’s leading museums, internationally recognised for its dual role as a centre of excellence in scientific research and as a leader in the presentation of natural history through exhibitions, public programmes, publications and the web.
We are now looking to appoint a Head of Design, who will be responsible for setting the vision for design at the Natural History Museum and delivering this through multiple outputs including exhibitions, galleries, public realm and through 3D, 2D and digital. The role is instrumental in building design leadership at the Museum, supporting the Museum to build its reputation as a world-class museum. This will be integral to successful delivery of the Museum’s ambitious plans across a number of strategic areas including masterplan redevelopments and high profile temporary exhibitions, ambitious new international touring programme, commercial developments and digital products.
The role will be the design champion working with senior stakeholders to influence the application of sophisticated design approaches that build brand, support the Museum’s visitors, showcases the Museum’s collections and science and builds reputation with external stakeholders. This role will be responsible for leading an internal design studio and commissioning external designers and will provide strong design leadership to deliver coherent approaches across all programmes of engagement and channels of communication.
To be successful in this role you will have a degree (or equivalent) in a design related area with experience across a range of design including 3D, 2D, digital. You will have a comprehensive understanding of RIBA design stages, with a proven ability to translate into concrete deliverables and will have worked with collections before.
You are highly experienced in leading the development of design briefs, commissioning and recruiting design teams and delivering outputs with the proven ability to lead teams to deliver exhibition and gallery design. You will have a proven ability to plan resource, cost projects effectively and appropriately and to deliver in procurement processes.
